Window quotes are unusually hard to compare because two prices for 'ten windows' can describe very different jobs. These are the questions that expose the difference.
The cheapest quote is often an insert where a full-frame is needed. Ask what happens if the sill is rotten, and get the answer in writing before you sign anything.
Many companies sell windows and subcontract the fitting to whoever is free that week. A window is only as good as its installation, so ask whether the crew are employees.
New Jersey publishes a register of home improvement contractors. Every legitimate contractor has a number and will give it to you without hesitating. Check it before the deposit, not after.

Modern windows need very little, but the little they need matters. Ten minutes twice a year keeps the hardware and the seals working for decades.
Grit in the track is what wears sliders and stops sashes seating fully. Vacuum them out in spring and autumn — that is the whole job.
The small slots along the bottom of the exterior frame drain water out of the sill. Sealed shut, water backs up inside the frame. This is a genuinely common mistake.
A little dry silicone on casement cranks and hinges. Avoid oil-based lubricants, which collect dust and make the problem worse over time.
